Le BMP-1 est un véhicule de combat d'infanterie soviétique mis en service en 1966. Conçu comme le premier véhicule de ce type produit en série, il combinait mobilité, capacités amphibies et un armement plus puissant que les transporteurs précédents.

Contrairement au BTR-50P standard de l'époque, le BMP-1 était équipé non seulement d'une mitrailleuse, mais aussi d'un canon et d'un lanceur pour missiles guidés antichars (ATGM).

Le BMP-1 est devenu un véhicule largement exporté et a constitué pendant des décennies l'épine dorsale de nombreuses formations mécanisées. Outre l'URSS, des licences pour sa production ont été achetées par la Tchécoslovaquie et la Roumanie. Des véhicules de ce type ont également été utilisés, entre autres, par les armées polonaise, irakienne, grecque et l'Armée nationale populaire de la RDA.
