Compare COBI BR 52 steam locomotive sets and the Compiègne wagon. Find the right historical train set for your collection with clear decision rules.
Quick answer
Choose the COBI DR BR 52 Steam Locomotive & Railway Semaphore if you want a complete railway scene with figures and signaling. Pick the standalone COBI Kriegslokomotive Baureihe 52 Locomotive if you prefer a focused locomotive build. Consider the Compiègne Wagon if your interest is in railway history and the iconic Orient Express carriage.
What makes these sets different
The two COBI BR 52 locomotive sets share the same core subject — the German steam locomotive from World War II — but they differ in what comes in the box. Set #6281 is a standalone locomotive model, while Set #6287 includes the locomotive plus a railway semaphore and two figures. The Compiègne Wagon (Set #6289) is a separate historical railway car with no locomotive, so you'll need a different set to pull it.
All three sets use the 1:35 scale, so they combine well if you want to build a larger railway diorama. The main trade-off is between getting more pieces and figures versus a more focused, lower-cost locomotive build.
Scale and compatibility
Both BR 52 sets and the Compiègne Wagon are built to 1:35 scale, the standard for COBI's historical railway collection. This means you can place the wagon behind either locomotive set and it will look proportional. The sets do not include track or a motor, so they are purely static display models — you cannot run them on a layout.
How to choose
- Start with your display goal: If you want a single locomotive as a centerpiece, choose Set #6281. If you want a railway scene with a semaphore and figures, choose Set #6287.
- Check the piece count: Set #6287 has 2,747 pieces versus the standalone locomotive's lower piece count. More pieces means more building time and a larger finished model with the semaphore and figures.
- Consider the Compiègne Wagon separately: The Compiègne Wagon (Set #6289) is a standalone historical car with no locomotive. Buy it only if you already have a locomotive set or plan to get one. If you're building a historical diorama, the wagon adds a unique story element from the armistices in Compiègne.
